More about Calhoun Speckled Crowder

Vigna unguiculata

Calhoun Crowder is an heirloom variety of cowpea dating back to 1949.  Developed by Dr. P. L. Hawthorne of the Calhoun Research Station in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, Calhoun Crowder produces excellent yields of long, mostly green pods tightly packed with round, speckled peas.  The plants have a bushy habit with the pods held high and upright for easy picking.  They are reported to have excellent resistance to wilt and nematodes and indeed were very healthy and high-yielding in our trials.

Calhoun Crowder is a quick shelling pea, with pods that unzip easily, making fast work of putting them by.  Its fat, crowder-type peas have a hearty, old-fashioned flavor that Southern pea enthusiasts are sure to enjoy.  A rare treasure that marked the beginning of the golden era of pea breeding at the Calhoun Research Station.  There has been a consolidation in Southern pea varieties over the years, but this is one that we think is well worth preserving.  65-70 days to maturity.  Each packet contains a minimum of 25 seeds.
