More about Dragon's Egg

Cucumis sativus

Dragon's Egg is a Croatian heirloom cucumber that produces enormous yields of round, 3 to 4-inch long, cream-colored cucumbers that resemble large eggs.  A fun variety for children to grow, with a mild flavor and thin skins that do not require peeling. Dragon's Egg is one of our favorite varieties for making creamy cucumber salad.  Harvests begin 55 days after sowing.  Each packet contains a minimum of 25 seeds.

Early and heavy yields.

Micro climate zone 5b, south exposure on a ridge overlooking L. Superior. Milder winters and summer due to lake effect winter warming and summer cooling. But.... the cold Lake surface water keeps our Springs on the cool side. Gardening season starts a little later than inland, but last frost is much earlier and 1st frost is significantly later in the year. These white cucumbers are the new first of the season. Previous earliest yielding has been Spacemaster. Like Spacemaster minimal space is needed if grown on a trellis. A test plant is growing fine on a vertical stake system. Backyard garden receives only 5-7hrs of and front yard garden 6-8 hours. Dragon's Egg plants are thriving in both. So far, no disease or pest issues.

The one negative is a personal taste issue. Too mild a flavor. 2nd white variety tried. Neither are at top of my list for fresh eaters. Why only 4stars.
