Freckles Romaine Lettuce

More about Freckles

Lactuca sativa

Also known as Forellenschluss, this unusual romaine-type lettuce produces vibrantly colored chartreuse leaves with burgundy spots and speckles. Freckles has become a staple in our own home garden, and we enjoy eating it at all stages. As we are thinning plants, we harvest the young leaves for baby lettuce mixes and later we harvest full heads for Ceasar salads. We have found Freckles to be crispier, less watery, and more flavorful than store-bought romaine. Harvests begin approximately 26 days after sowing, with full-size heads harvested roughly 55 days after sowing.  Each packet contains a minimum of 500 seeds.

33% germination

Of course there may be many issues, my own skill among them, but I'm a little disappointed by the germination rate of 33% and slowness of their growth. Of 6, only 2 germinated.

Hi Alan, I'm sorry you had poor results with our Freckles seed. We just retested this lot at the end of July and had 85% germ, but it is always possible that something happened in transit. I will be in touch about a refund or replacement.

nice lettuce

this lettuce is showing excellent germination, and, the first tiny leaves, only 1/2 " so far, show early beautiful speckling. . . so cute !

freckles romaine

Our lettuce has had an excellent germination rate. The seedlings are still very small ( about an inch) and we've been having to water them every morning and shade them as the heat here is unseasonable.
