Plains Coreopsis Semi-Dwarf Yellow

Plains coreopsis, a native wildflower, thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It's incredibly adaptable and can grow in a range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, or rocky soils. This annual wildflower is drought-tolerant once established and blooms best in hot, sunny conditions. Sow the seeds directly in the garden in spring after the last frost date. Plains coreopsis displays brilliant yellow and maroon flowers and is ideal for meadows, borders, or naturalized landscapes. Its ability to thrive in poor soils and its cheerful blooms make it a valuable addition to sunny gardens.

Direct sow seeds in early spring or in fall for climates with mild winters. Sow seeds 1/16" deep into prepared garden bed. Keep well-watered until germination has occurred (14-28 days). Thin plants to one every 12-18" once germination has occurred.

Not recommended

Plains coreopsis make excellent cut flowers that will last for several days in a vase. Harvest when about half of the flowers within a spray are open to prolong vase life.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Saving seeds from Plains Coreopsis is relatively easy and a fun activity for children. There are a few different varieties within this species so care must be taken to prevent pollination contamination from occurring if more than one variety is being grown at once.

HARVESTING SEED:

To save seeds, simply allow the flowers to completely mature and form dry seed heads. Keep an eye on them as they dry and look for the formation of dark brown seeds on the head. Once it seems that the heads are mostly dry, cut entire heads fro the plant and place in an open paper bag to finish drying. Rub your fingers along the seed heads to release the seeds or alternatively, place in a sealed container and shake. Winnow, if desired, and store in an airtight container until ready to use.

Plains coreopsis seeds will remain viable for several years if stored under ideal conditions.
