Clarkia amoena

Also known as satin flower or farewell-to-spring, Godetia is an improved wildflower that is native to the Pacific northwest. Its Latin name "Clarkia" was chosen in honor of Captain William Clark, who along with Meriwether Lewis, led the famed Lewis and Clark expedition across the western United States in 1804-1806.  Lilac Godetia grows 12 to 24 inches tall producing beautiful lavender-colored flowers.  Plants have a mounding habit with flowers borne in clusters at the end of the branches for a showy effect.  Flowers within a single cluster bloom in succession over a period of several days, lengthening the vase life of this beloved cut flower.  Godetia performs best in cooler climates and does not tolerat... How to Grow Godetia

Godetia is an easy-to-grow flower that thrives in average to poor soil with full to partial sun exposure. Godetia prefers cool weather and can be subject to floral abortion or the development of weak and spindly stems if plants are grown in especially hot climates. Here in Iowa, we have had good success planting these flowers in areas that receive shade during the hottest parts of the day.

Sow seeds indoors approximately 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds 1/16" deep in premoistened seed starting mix. Keep moist until germination has occurred (5-10 days.) Transplant outdoors as soon as soil can be worked. Can also be direct seeded in late spring, and fall in warmer climates. Thin to a final stand of one plant every 6-12 inches.

Harden off seedlings and plant outdoors after danger of frost has passed, spacing plants 6-12 inches in all directions. Keep watered until plants are established.

Godetia make excellent cut flowers with a long vase life. Harvest the floral stems when the earliest flowers are beginning to open. Spent blooms will fall off the stem and new blooms will continue to open for several days.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Saving seeds from Godetia is relatively easy. Isolation is required if multiple varieties are being grown in a single year.

HARVESTING SEED:

Allow seed pods to dry and become brown. Pick from the plant and hold over a container as you pinch and pull apart the pods to release the small brownish-black seeds. Allow to dry completely for one week, then store in an airtight container until ready to use.

SEED LONGETIVITY:

Godetia seeds can remain viable for several years if stored under ideal conditions.

Poor Germination

Unfortunately, these godetia had poor, spotty germination. I am a flower farmer and was looking for some unique colors for my godetia crop. 350 of these godetia seeds were planted alongside 350 godetia seeds from another seed company that I regularly use. Thresh's seeds have come up very spotty while the others are at 95%-100% germination. I'm sure the plants will be healthy and beautiful, but I would expect better germination rates.
