More about Roma II

Phaseolus vulgaris

Roma II is a popular Italian green bean variety that produces heavy, continuous yields of 5 to 6-inch flattened pods.  Released in 1978 as a more reliable and disease resistant strain of the original Roma bean, Roma II features compact, bush-type plants perform well under a variety of conditions.  Although usually quite bushy in nature, some have reported that Roma II bush beans can develop short runners under certain environmental conditions.  We have yet to experience this, and it reportedly occurs very rarely, but it is a known phenomenon for this variety.

Note that this variety germinates more slowly than other bush beans.  It also resents cool, wet soil.  Do not pre-soak the seeds.  D... More

In terms of flavor, Roma beans are among the most flavorful we've grown.  Their stringless, pale green pods can grow quite large without getting stringy or fibrous and they are renowned for their ability to retain their flavor even after being cooked.  We love to sauté them in olive oil, adding a splash of soy sauce and some garlic powder just before serving.  Harvests begin approximately 58 days after sowing.  Each packet contains a minimum of 50 seeds.

No germination

Planted 50 seeds in good soil 1 1nch. 5 seeds germinated...that's all. We did have a wet week after planting so that may have effected somewhat, but 5 out of 50 is not realistic. I will likely replant, but I don't know where I will source the seeds. Based on other reviews, I will try another vendor.

Hi Steven thanks for your review. We offer a 100% guarantee on all of our seeds and this year's stock is germinating at 85%+ so I'm sure we have some good replacments to send you. Your instincts are right on this variety-- it does not like to be overly wet. Usually when we hear of trouble with Roma II, it is from gardeners who tried to pre-soak the seeds before planting, or as in your experience, had especially wet weather after sowing. Whatever the case, weather or possibly some issue during transit, we're happy to get you some more seed.

Roma green bean

Roma is the best tasting and easiest to can of all green beans. This is one heavy bearing and easy to pick bean. Roma is by far my favorite of all green beans.
