More about Slobolt

Lactuca sativa

Released in 1946 by the USDA's Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland, Slobolt is an improved Grand Rapids-type lettuce that has been selected for resistance to bolting in warm temperatures.  Plants produce large clumps of crinkled, light green leaves with a pleasant mild flavor and smooth texture.  Unlike many lettuces of its type, Slobolt does not become bitter as warm weather approaches.  Seeds of this selection have improved germination in warm weather but are still best suited for spring planting.  Harvests begin approximately 45 to 55 days after sowing.  Each packet contains a minimum of 250 seeds.
