More about Andrew Rahart's Jumbo Red

Solanum lycopersicum

Andrew Rahart's Jumbo Red is a very rare heirloom variety that produces large one to two-pound tomatoes with bright red skins and unbelievably flavorful interiors.  An Italian heirloom, this delicious tomato was collected by seed saver Andrew Rahart, who lived north of New York City and was known for collecting seeds from immigrants in the area.  It was eventually shared with John Rahart of Wyoming who introduced it to the Seed Savers Exchange in the early 1980's.  Owing to its giant-sized flavor, this little-known tomato has slowly but surely garnered a cult following among heirloom tomato lovers.

Listed in her book 100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden, author Dr. Carolyn Male describes the flavor of Andew Rahart's Jumbo Red as "Huge in taste and aroma," and goes on to exclaim that "the flavor is so overwhelmingly good that it seduced me at first bite." That flavor, so perfectly balanced and in Dr. Male's words, "not sweet or acidic, but deep and luscious" is the reason we picked up this variety nearly ten years ago.

For their part, the plants are large, vigorous and indeterminate in nature, producing nice yields of tomatoes beginning around 80 days after transplant and continuing until frost.  The tomatoes have thicker skins that are somewhat resistant to cracking which makes them a great choice for tougher climates with somewhat erratic weather patterns. All-in-all, if you are looking for a great tasting heirloom tomato, Andrew Rahart's Jumbo Red is it.  Surely one of our best tasting tomatoes.  80 days to harvest.  50 seeds per packet.
