More about Millersburg Red No. 2

Zea mays

Millersburg Red No. 2 is an old heirloom variety of sweet corn that produces sweet kernels with a unique, red-tinged cast.  Likely originating from Millersburg, Ohio this heirloom sweet corn was acquired in 1959 by Earl T. Friend of Highland Springs, Virginia who stewarded the variety until donating it to the USDA in 1983.  While there are a few colored sweet corns on the market, this is the only one we're aware of with this unique color pattern.  If you look closely at the kernels, you can see a starburst pattern emanating from the silk scar.  It's really quire beautiful.  Note that as the pigment is produced in the pericarp (the outer covering of the kernel) the red color will initially be faint, intensifyin... Millersburg Red is an easy variety to grow with somewhat compact plants that reach just 5-6 feet at maturity.  The well-formed ears average 6 to 7 inches long and 12 rows around with densely packed, sweet kernels that mature from yellow to red.  Millersburg Red matures approximately 80 days after sowing.  Each packet contains a minimum of 50 seeds.
